What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide. While it can occur at any age, it is most common in adults over the age of 60. Glaucoma refers to a group of conditions in which the optic nerve is damaged.

Glaucoma often goes unnoticed as it happens gradually, which is why it is important to catch the condition early. There are several different forms of glaucoma, all of which can show different symptoms. The most common forms of glaucoma include:

Open-Angle Glaucoma

Open-angle glaucoma is the most common form of glaucoma, which occurs when pressure in the eye is gradually increased and damages the optic nerve. It doesn’t show many symptoms as it tends to develop slowly over time. Some things to look out for are:

  • Patchy spots in your central or peripheral vision
  • Tunnel vision

Acute Angle-Closure Glaucoma

Acute angle-closure glaucoma, also known as closed-angle glaucoma, can develop suddenly. It occurs when the iris emerges forward to block the drainage angle formed by the iris and cornea. It’s important to look out for symptoms of:

  • Eye pain
  • Blurred vision
  • Halos around lights
  • Eye redness
  • Severe headache

Glaucoma Eye Drops

There are eye drops available to treat glaucoma. Eye drops are typically the first route of treatment for patients with glaucoma. Your ophthalmologist can prescribe you eye drops, and to ensure successful treatment you must take them consistently.

Here’s how eye drops work to help you recover from the effects of glaucoma:

  • Eye drops for glaucoma decrease the pressure that has built up in your eye.
  • This allows your eye to drain fluid more effectively.
  • Additionally, this will decrease the amount of fluid created by your eye.

If eye drops do not improve your condition, Dr. Haas and Dr. Davis may recommend surgery in order to provide you with long-term relief.

If you’re struggling with glaucoma and feel you may benefit from glaucoma eye drops as prescribed by an experienced specialist, schedule your appointment today. At Haas Vision Center, we’ll work with you to develop a treatment plan and help you learn more about how to manage your glaucoma.

LPI & SLT Laser Surgery Treatment

Glaucoma Surgery Treatment

If eye drops have not improved your glaucoma, or if they have caused significant side effects, Dr. Haas and Dr. Davis may recommend surgical intervention. Haas Vision Center’s qualified team offers two types of surgery to treat your glaucoma and help restore your vision.

The two most common surgeries we recommend at Haas Vision Center are:

SLT Laser Surgery

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty is used to lower the eye pressure caused by glaucoma. During this surgery, laser energy is applied to the drainage tissue, resulting in improved fluid drainage out of the eye. Patients with open-angle glaucoma are typically good candidates for this option of surgery.

LPI Laser Surgery

Laser peripheral iridotomy is the standard procedure for closed-angle glaucoma. During this surgery, the laser inserts a hole in the outer iris and widens the angle so that fluid outflow is increased. Those who have angle closed glaucoma in at least half of the eye are good candidates for this procedure. If you have a closed angle, yet you have normal eye pressure, this surgery can be used as a preventative measure against glaucoma.

The ophthalmology team at Haas Vision Center is dedicated to making sure you have received the best care possible, even after your surgery. Three months after your procedure, your doctor will follow up with you to check in and see how your vision is doing.

If you are in need of glaucoma surgery, trust the opthamologists at Haas Vision Center. Schedule your appointment today.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Can I Prevent Glaucoma?

Practicing self care techniques can help you to detect any signs of glaucoma early enough to prevent vision loss. Some techniques include:

  • Getting Eye Exams RegularlyIt is important to get frequent comprehensive eye exams in order to catch any early signs of glaucoma. It is recommended to catch glaucoma in its early stages before any significant damage can be done.
  • Knowing Your Family’s HistoryYou should be aware of your family’s medical history and risk factors. Glaucoma often runs in families, so knowing this could help you stay on top of it.
  • Protect Your EyesWear protective eyewear whenever you are doing anything that could harm your eyes. Injuries to the eye can cause glaucoma, so it is imperative that you are safe.
Does Glaucoma Surgery Hurt?

Patients usually won’t feel any pain during or after any of the surgical treatment options we offer at Haas Vision Center. It is possible you could feel discomfort in the weeks following your surgery, but any sensation should not be painful or concerning. Pain medication should not be necessary during your recovery.

How Often Will I have To Use Eye Drops?

If your eye drops are successful in lowering your eye pressure, you should use them every day. It is imperative that you stay consistent with prescription eye drops, even if you don’t have symptoms. Using the eye drops regularly can reduce the risk of eye pressure, which can ultimately lead to glaucoma.
